FDA OKs New Drug for Urinary Tract Infections

The FDA has approved Orlynvah, a new oral treatment for uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women who have limited options for effective antibiotic therapy. Orlynvah was approved based on two large clinical trials involving over 3,800 women. In these studies, Orlynvah worked as well as or better than antibiotics like ciprofloxacin and amoxicillin. It was generally well-tolerated, though common side effects included diarrhea, nausea, yeast infections and headaches. Full Access: Medscape

Mpox in the U.S. and Around the World: Current Situation

The first case of clade I in the U.S. has been confirmed. The patient returned from travel to an affected area and is recovering after seeking medical care. No additional cases have been reported at this time. Clade II mpox is still circulating at low levels. Full Access: CDC

Antibiotic-Resistant Infections in UK Exceed Pre-Pandemic Levels

National surveillance data published by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) showed that antibiotic-resistant infections in 2023 surpassed pre-pandemic levels, with an estimated 66,730 serious antibiotic-resistant infections in 2023 compared with 62,314 in 2019. Full Access: DGAlerts
