The regulations that influence the practice of occupational medicine will be reviewed. Workers’ Compensation regulations will be described as to how they affect employees, employers and clinicians. The importance of required workers’ compensation “paperwork” that must be completed by the clinician caring for an injured worker will be explained. It is essential that the “first reports” of injury and illness depict a comprehensive and detailed history. “Follow-up reports” describe the clinical progress of the case, and the diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for injured workers are reviewed by claims adjusters to authorize the medical care required. Determining causation of an injury or illness is extremely important to justify care under the workers compensation system. Certain “presumption” situations exist in the workers’ compensation system for specified medical conditions among particular occupations. These presumptive situations will be described. An overview of various medico-legal examinations applicable to workers’ compensation care will be discussed.
