This presentation will review resources to help providers prepare for such a visit and what questions to ask the traveler at intake.
Only about a third of international travelers seek pre-travel counseling. Of those, over half go to their PCP. Travel-related risks include infectious diseases, unsanitary conditions and other environmental exposures, unsafe vehicles and neighborhoods, and even the journey itself. A “travel medicine consultation” is the individualized counseling that occurs after assessing a patient’s fitness for travel and the risks of their destination(s). Just as a traveler fills a suitcase with both necessary and helpful items to use abroad, the consultant provides travelers with immunizations, medications, and knowledge to carry with them. This presentation will review resources to help providers prepare for such a visit and what questions to ask the traveler at intake. It will also review “The Ten Commandments (for International Travelers),” detailing required, recommended, and routine vaccinations for travel abroad, and putting attention on prophylactic medications against malaria and treatments for traveler’s diarrhea.
