JUCM Highlight: The Effect of Computer Use in the Exam Room on Patient Satisfaction in Urgent Care

A study highlighted in the Journal of Urgent Care Medicine explored how computer use during patient visits impacts the patient experience. The findings suggest that while electronic health records are essential to care delivery, the way clinicians use computers in the exam room can influence patient perceptions of communication, engagement and overall satisfaction.

For Urgent Care clinicians, the takeaway is clear: maintaining eye contact, explaining how technology supports care and balancing screen time with patient interaction can help preserve the personal connection patients value. As technology continues to play a larger role in healthcare, thoughtful exam room communication remains a key driver of patient satisfaction and trust.
