Joint Position Statement from UCCOP and CUCM on “Urgent Care Kits”

The Urgent Care College of Physicians (UCCOP) and the College of Urgent Care Medicine (CUCM) jointly affirm our commitment to evidence‑based practice, responsible prescribing and the highest standards of patient safety. In alignment with these principles, we do not support the development, distribution or promotion of so‑called “Urgent Care kits” that include pre‑packaged antibiotics, steroids or other prescription medications intended for unsupervised use. These kits undermine the core tenets of antibiotic and steroid stewardship by encouraging treatment without appropriate clinical evaluation, diagnostic reasoning or follow‑up. Such practices increase the risk of inappropriate medication use, adverse effects, delayed diagnosis and the broader public health threat of antimicrobial and steroid resistance.

UCCOP and CUCM directly oppose any model of care that circumvents clinician assessment or promotes the routine availability of prescription medications outside an individualized, patient‑specific encounter with evidence-based treatment recommendations. We remain committed to advancing stewardship, supporting clinicians in delivering safe and effective care, and ensuring that prescribing practices reflect the best interests of both individual patients and the communities we serve.
