A growing outbreak of cyclosporiasis is prompting concern across several Northeast and Midwest states, with Michigan reporting case counts far above typical seasonal levels and increases also emerging in Ohio, Illinois, and New York.
Caused by the Cyclospora parasite and commonly linked to contaminated fresh produce, the illness can lead to prolonged watery diarrhea, fatigue, abdominal cramping, and nausea. As summer case numbers rise, urgent care clinicians should keep cyclosporiasis on their differential diagnosis for patients presenting with persistent gastrointestinal symptoms and consider requesting specific testing, as the parasite may not be included in standard GI panels.

The CDC reminds us that the best ways to stay safe in the heat are simple: stay cool, stay hydrated, and know the signs of heat-related illness. Lindsey E. Fish MD, FCUCM, President of the College of Urgent Care Medicine (CUCM), recently served as an international keynote speaker at Australia’s inaugural 𝗨𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 in Sydney. The conference convened healthcare executives, clinicians, policymakers and operational leaders to discuss the future of Urgent Care and the opportunities created by the sector’s rapid growth across Australia.
In her keynote presentation, “𝗨𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲: 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗲𝗻, 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗲, 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗚𝗼,” Dr. Fish shared insights on the history, evolution and future direction of Urgent Care, highlighting lessons learned and opportunities for innovation as Urgent Care models continue to expand worldwide.

The 2025-2026 cycle of the Clinical Advisory Group (CAG) is coming to a close as the 2026-2027 cycle kicks off this weekend at The Assembly in Washington, D.C. The CAG brings together medical leaders in Urgent Care to identify opportunities and develop practical resources. Each year, the group identifies up to three core initiatives.

Urgent Care Quality Metrics Framework
Clinician Productivity Statement
Recognizing the growing focus on efficiency and sustainability, the CAG developed a clinician productivity position statement intended to help organizations evaluate productivity through a balanced lens that considers quality, patient outcomes and workforce well-being.
Standardized Clinician Onboarding
To support successful integration of new clinicians into Urgent Care, the group also created a standardized clinician onboarding framework designed to promote consistency, accelerate readiness and enhance the clinician experience.
These deliverables will be shared with College members as a member benefit.
Looking Ahead to 2026–2027
The incoming Clinical Advisory Group will convene during The Assembly to identify its priorities for the coming year. New initiatives and deliverables for the 2026–2027 cycle will be announced in the months ahead.
