CDC Expects ‘Tripledemic’ Hospitalizations to Remain High This Year vs Prepandemic Levels

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on September 14th, it expects the total number of hospitalizations from COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus infections and flu this year to be similar to last year, higher than pre-pandemic levels. FDA Panel Deems Phenylephrine Ineffective

America’s most popular oral nasal decongestant,  was deemed ineffective by a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) panel in a unanimous vote on September 12. The vote that formally declared phenylephrine ineffective was in line with a review of data presented by the FDA on Monday, which found the oral bioavailability of the drug is less than 1%, compared with 38%, a number often cited in the literature was deemed ineffective by a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) panel. New Antibiotic Could Combat Multidrug-Resistant Superbugs

This drug, isolated from bacteria that haven’t previously been studied, seems to be capable of combating multidrug-resistant “superbugs” thanks to unusual mechanisms of action. The researchers showed that clovibactin acts via several mechanisms and that it successfully treated mice infected with the superbug Staphylococcus aureus.

Clovibactin exhibited antibacterial activity against a broad range of gram-positive pathogens. Full Access: Medscape

FDA Approves RSV Vaccine for Pregnant Individuals to Prevent Virus in Infants

The FDA has approved the first vaccine for use in pregnant individuals to prevent lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) and severe LRTD caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in infants from birth through 6 months of age.1The approval for the new indication was based on a pivotal trial in more than 7000 pregnant individuals.
